Home security is big business these days, and while technology for protecting homes advances exponentially, sadly, so do criminal tactics and methods for breaking into other people’s properties. However, with a combination of hyper vigilance, proven security measures and a willingness to think like a burglar (a horrible prospect, I know), you can better protect your home and your valuables from theft.
Thinking like a burglar
Did you know that on average, a burglar spends less than ten minutes in your home? Starting with a quick search for jewelry and other small valuables (or if you don’t have them locked away in a safe, their search may be even quicker), burglars will start in your bedroom and then as they begin to make their way out of your home, they’ll grab whatever they can that looks to be of value, from electronics to credit cards.
They might not be in your home for long, but they know what they’re looking for and oftentimes, they know exactly where to find them, and can be responsible for stealing thousands of dollars’ worth of your prized and beloved possessions.
Thinking like a burglar means that you don’t leave your drapes or blinds open with valuable items clearly visible through the window, the house isn’t in total darkness (motion sensor lights can help light it up before they make their way into your home), your smaller valuables and important documents are locked away in a high security residential safe, and your home is properly secured from the outside.
Let’s look at these tips in a little more detail:
- Don’t leave valuables in plain sight – while it of course isn’t possible to lock all of your valuable items away in a safe, you can do your best to make sure that larger items of value aren’t visible through the window, and aren’t hidden in obvious places, such as your sock drawer or in a closet!
- Lock smaller items of value in a safe – expensive or sentimental jewelry, important documents, guns and anything else precious and small enough to be locked away in a high security burglar proof safe, should be, at all times.
- Upgrade your locks – from doors and windows, to your garage, every possible entranceway for burglars should be locked securely with deadbolts and high security locks; talk to a local security expert such as a safe installer or residential locksmith for more advice on locking systems.
- Have a comprehensive security system – from burglar alarms to CCTV cameras, a robust security system will deter even the bravest (or stupidest, or most desperate!) burglar from trying to get into your home.
- Prioritise security over privacy – while tall shrubs may help make your home feel more private, they can also provide cover for burglars and intruders. Don’t let your desire for privacy, override your need for security while at home.
- Illuminate vulnerable areas – motion sensor lights at strategic places around your home, will help highlight a criminals activities, and hopefully send them running in the opposite direction.
Your home is worth protecting at any cost, because it’s not just your valuables that are at risk, but your entire family, pets included. Follow the above tips and talk to a local security expert if you’re concerned about your safety at home.
